Sad day for hummingbirds July 10, 2008

I’m afraid that the hummingbird babies didn’t make it.  Lorraine was inspecting the nest this morning, and found them both dead.   Our best guess is that something happened to mama, and the chicks weren’t quite ready to fend for themselves.

Sad day indeed.

That is indeed very sad,but it is a fact of nature. It may shock you, as it did me, to learn that up to three-quarters of a given year’s fledglings are likely to die due to numerous causes. These include the following: predators, disease, accident, problems which occur during migration, or other problems.

Thanks for your comment, Zoe. I hadn’t realised that the loss rate was so high, although, looked at rationally, it makes sense. This is now the third hummingbird family we’ve seen started, and only one pair of chicks survived to leave the nest (and we did get to see that, and it was a remarkable and heartwarming sight)
